Longmont Brewers Collaborate on The Wannapreneur
June 27, 2017 -
Longmont’s craft brewers and St. Vrain Cidery have joined forces to brew up something special for Longmont Startup Week. It is a collaboration for Longmont and about Longmont, a beer made exclusively for Longmont Startup Week and only available during Startup Week. This beer is called The Wannapreneur. It was created as a way to celebrate and give back to the Longmont startup community. A portion of every Wannapreneur sold will be donated to the Longmont Ignite! Fund, a fund established by community-minded individuals to make grants available to early-stage startups in Longmont.
“I was excited to see this collaboration come to life, which actually spawned from a middle-of-the-night ‘ah-ha!’ moment. Since Longmont has such a strong brewery presence, I thought what better a way to celebrate Longmont Startup Week than with a special beer that would in turn benefit our local entrepreneurs. It’s been fun to see all the brewers get involved and be so willing to support our startup community in this way,” said Dana Schnieber, Marketing Specialist and Event Coordinator for the Longmont Economic Development Partnership.
Longmont brewers began meeting several months ago to brainstorm ideas on how to make this beer uniquely Longmont. Some of the ideas proposed were a New England style IPA, a zero IBU IPA, and a PB&J tribute to Smuckers, who recently announced plans to open a manufacturing plant in Longmont. The group eventually landed on the idea of a unique cider-beer hybrid in a blond ale style, which would also bring St. Vrain Cidery, a recent startup in Longmont, into the collaboration. Once the style was determined, the brewers reconvened at 300 Suns for a juice and hop sampling to determine a formula and specific ingredients.
Brewers came together on June 22, 2017 at 300 Suns Brewing to collaborate on the brewing process and contribute ingredients.
The Wannapreneur was brewed using experimental hops, Kolsch-style yeasts from Inland Island in Denver, malts from Root Shoot Malting in Loveland, and fresh apple juice from the western slope in Colorado. The hops used were HBC 438 and it’s sister, HBC 472, which are experimental hops developed by the Hop Breeding Company in Yakima Valley, Washington. HBC 438 imparts a strong and complex fruit flavor to the beer, with a unique aroma of fruity, citrus, and coconut. HBC 472 delivers a surprising fruity note with its distinctive coconut-woody character. With this combination, The Wannapreneur is expected to be a bright and crisp ale full of apple and citrus flavors, perfect for patio season!
“I am excited for Longmont Startup Week!” said Dan Ditslear, Owner of 300 Suns Brewing. “It’s been great to have the breweries come up with the idea, throw some new ideas into the mix, and brew together today. We were able to meet some of the newer breweries in Longmont for the first time through this process, and the older breweries in town have been really supportive in planning and developing the recipe. The knowledge base from all the local brewers combined made this a great collaboration!”
